Darknesse Visible a new recording by pianist Inon Barnatan (Avie Records) brings together colorful works by British and French composers which are inspired by literature and evocatively explore the interconnection of darkness and light. To further illustrate the themes of the works, Inon collaborated with videographer Tristan Cook and artist Zack Smithey on a series of short video vignettes. Thomas Adés's "Darknesse Visible" is an exploration of John Dowland's lute song In Darknesse Let Me Dwell (1610). Without changing a single note or rhythm, Adès 'explodes' the song (to use his own term) in rapt slow motion, changing the textures, registers and dynamics so that the original is dispersed and seems to be vibrating in the air, appearing to the listener as if from within a dream.
